Area of Expertise: Development of World Englishes/Multilingualism and Language Policy
Andy Kirkpatrick is Chair Professor of English as an International Language at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and Director of the Institute’s Research Centre into Language Education and Acquisition in Multilingual Societies. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Curtin University in Australia.
He has a BA in Chinese Studies from Leeds, a Postgraduate Diploma in Chinese Literature from Fudan University, Shanghai, an MA in ELT and Linguistics form York and a PhD in Chinese linguistics for the Australian National University.
He has taught in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Teacher Education in tertiary institutions in Australia, Burma, China, England, Hong Kong and Singapore.
His research interests include the development of regional varieties of English, language education and the history of Chinese rhetoric. World Englishes: implications for international communication and ELT was published in 2007 by Cambridge University Press. His latest book, English as a Lingua Franca in ASEAN: the Multilingual Model, is to be published by Hong Kong University Press in 2010. He is editor of Routledge’s forthcoming (2010) Handbook of World Englishes, and his book, Chinese Rhetoric and Persuasion, is to be published by the French publishers, Klincksieck, also in 2010.
