Alastair Pennycook is Professor and Head of Language Studies at UTS. He has been involved in language education as a teacher of English and teacher educator for many years in Germany, Japan, China, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. His best known work is on the global spread of English (The cultural politics of English as an international language, Longman, 1994), colonialism and language policy (English and the discourses of colonialism, Routledge, 1998), and critical applied linguistics (Critical applied linguistics: A critical introduction, Lawrence Erlbaum, 2001).

His major recent research focus has been on popular culture (especially hip-hop), identity and language. He has recently completed work on two major projects looking at how language and hip-hop are spread and localized in different contexts around the world. Work from these projects can be found in his 2007 book Global Englishes and transcultural flows (Routledge), which won the British Association of Applied Linguistics book award in 2008, the edited book (with Samy Alim and Awad Ibrahim) Global Linguistic Flows: Hip Hop Cultures, Youth Identities, and the Politics of Language, (Routledge 2009), or the Local Noise website: http://localnoise.net.au/

Other recent work has focused on different ways of understanding language, as in the recent edited book (with Sinfree Makoni) Disinventing and reconstituting languages (Multilingual Matters, 2007), metrolingualism: language use in multilingual urban environments (with Emi Otsuji) , early literacy in disadvantaged communities, and understanding language in relation to place and action, which is the focus of a new book to be published in 2010, Language as a Local Practice (Routledge).

TTD is a Sub Directorate under the Academic Directorate of Lembaga Bahasa dan Pendidikan Profesional LIA (LBPP-LIA). Its main responsibility is to foster professional development for the institution’s academic task force, the backbone of educational establishments. Consequently, TTD is in charge of and accountable for various pre-service and in-service training programs for LIA teachers and academic staff.

At the beginning, TTD was mostly responsible for the Recruitment and Selection (R/S) of LIA’s candidate teachers and the pre-service training (LIA TEFL – LIA Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) for LIA’s teacher trainees. In the course of time, it has broadened its scope of work by designing and conducting in-service trainings to meet the development and trends of English Language Teaching and the increasing variety of programs offered by the institution. Other in-service and customized trainings were also designed and carried out for LIA’s various academic positions (materials & test writers, academic supervisors and curriculum designers). Aside from that, TTD also assists and collaborates with other academic sub-directorates in conducting teaching quality assurance and teacher mentoring, in developing needs assessment, curriculum design, materials & tests for LIA’s language programs.

With over 1000 teachers and academic staff spread out in LIA’s more than 50 outlets across Indonesia, serving over 60.000 students, teacher development programs designed and conducted by TTD plays a significant role in setting the course of English language teaching and learning in the country. This perception has lead to the conception of TTD’s vision and mission:

To be an English Language Teaching (ELT) training center in Indonesia by offering quality teacher training and development programs.

To achieve its vision and mission, TTD organizes events, develop programs and conducts trainings involving LIA experts as well as those from other institutions in the country and abroad, all aimed at developing passion for teaching.

Prof. Evangeline Manickam

The national costume of India is the sari which is one of the most graceful costumes for women. The sari is a continuous piece of fabric six yards in length. It is pleated and draped to provide comfort of movement while enhancing grace and modesty. The sari may be used as both formal and informal wear. The fabric can be crisp cotton or synthetic for daily wear, or rich silk heavily embroidered in gold (zari) for weddings and formal wear. Different regions in India have variations in the way the sari is draped. The sari is incomplete without jewellery to accessorize: necklaces and earrings, beads, bangles, anklets, and of course the ‘bindi’ which is worn on the forehead. Intricate hand decoration uses henna/mehndi to add beauty and charm.

The demo will be done over whatever clothes you may be wearing. Volunteer(s) will need a belt or elastic waist band for draping the sari. Hand make up and jewellery do not require any preparation.

Saudi and Makkah Customs During Hajj
Thursday, 29 April 2010; 13:00-14:30

Suzanne A. Wazzan

This session will be about Saudi role in serving pilgrims. It also deals with 6 Makkah customs during Hajj like celebrating, drinking coffee, serving pilgrims with zamzam, coffee and dates. The session is to highlight how they rent thier houses for pilgrims and work in trade like selling subha and gifts. All this will be done through pictures in the poster and hand outs for the attendances. There is also Maamool which is a kind of sweet we do in Al-Hajj. Some dates, Maamools, zamzam, coffee, Miswak, Subha will be distributed among the attendances.

Philippine National dance – Tinikling!
Thursday, 29 April 2010; 14:30-15:30

Gloria C. Kismadi and Luz Ismail

Tinikling is the most popular dance in the Philippines and honored as the Philippine national dance. Tinikling means “bamboo dance” in English. The dance imitates the movement of the tikling birds as they walk between grass stems, run over tree branches, or dodge bamboo traps set by rice farmers. Dancers imitate the tikling bird’s legendary grace and speed by skillfully maneuvering between large bamboo poles.

Here are some memorable impressions the committee received from the speakers and participants:

Andy Kirpatrick:

Many thanks for your wonderful hospitality and congratulations for a superbly organised conference. I found it both enjoyable and stimulating and was able to meet a number of new faces and renew some old friendships. Please pass on my thanks to all the members of the LIA team.

Willy Renandya:

I really enjoyed Bali and I must compliment the organizing committee for doing such a nice job. I’d give them 10 out of 10.

Doung Thi Hoang Oanh:

Thanks so much indeed for the great time I had in Bali with all the unforgettable memories: my first trip to Bali was so impressive that it would be the highlight of my traveling up to now!

I have found the conference a great success in every aspect. Academically, I had a chance to learn from well-known and typical presenters from the world and Indonesia. I could also talk to the committee and the participants to share ideas, set up future network and further collaboration.

Culturally, I have learned a lot about your culture with the unique dances and the folklore behind daily life styles. I love the way you organised the conference, making full use of modern techniques and the valuable cultural traces, with the gong to start the conference, and the bamboo bells to signals the sessions. Just wonderful and so Bali!

In terms of organisation, the conference was very well organised in a creative and thoughtful way: the contents were rich and comprehensive, covering different and diversified aspects and perspectives around similar themes. I trust that everyone felt fulfilled, learning new things everyday. The conference started with the well-made speeches and ended with an enthusiastic session which made everyone laugh, encouraged and happy. The balloon session on the beach was another memorable event as well.

The conference was unique in another sense that besides academic activities, there were many others interwoven into the “conference life”. Within a short time, we experienced different cultures, making friends all over the world, having chances to make quality conversations with them… I felt warm, safe, trusted and taken care of all the time.

Well, I could go on and on with you about how I love my Bali trip and how I consider it a best conference of them all.

Marc Helgesen:

I want to thank you for the opportunity to present at the LIA conference. I thought the conference was well organized and the participants were wonderful. They were so enthusiastic.

I was great to part of such a useful, professional event.
I wish you and all of your members great success and happiness in your teaching.

George Scholz:

A hearty congratulations to you and the LIA team for hosting such a wonderful conference! Your team’s efforts were incredible, the planning and details were all well done. I was so pleased to be able to participate. Thank you again for presenting a conference celebration of LIA at 50.

Ganakumaran Subramaniam

A very carefully planned and rigorously organised conference.

LIA is celebrating its 50 years of teaching English amidst considerations that are being raised in the current context of English language teaching. LIA started out with Audio-Lingual teaching practices, which, at that time, seemed to be the most common approach. In the process, as new methods and practices came about, LIA has explored and adopted new teaching practices to optimize language learning.

Today, English has become the language for communication spoken by native and non-native speakers worldwide. The tremendous demands for the use of English in the 21st century have forced language teaching experts and professionals to look into other concerns besides language teaching and learning alone but language teaching and learning in different settings, cultures, and linguistic backgrounds. The profession of English language teaching today has to examine the pros and cons that deal with considerations of World English or World Englishes, English as an International Language, and acceptable standards that should be applied.

To keep abreast with what language teaching experts are concerned with, LIA International Conference 2010 hopes to provide a platform for language teaching experts and professionals to bring in and share new insights, current considerations and problems that impact on language teaching and learning in all of its aspects: linguistic, social, and cultural. LIA hopes that with this kind of dialog, the conference will bring about a better understanding and greater tolerance and acceptance of the differences in communication among world cultures.
