RATIONALE

As a leading English language institution in Indonesia, committed to quality learning, LBPP LIA believes the importance of providing English language teachers with teacher development programs aimed at enhancing their professionalism. It is our conviction that teacher development is the heart and soul of the true professionals. In line with this conviction, LBPP LIA has conducted numerous workshops, seminars, national and international conferences, dedicated to English Language Teaching (ELT) practitioners whom we consider are the real experts in the field.

AIMS

To empower English language teachers in facing these challenges teaching students to use English to learn and at the same time facilitating students’ learning to use English. The presentation, workshop, and discussion sessions in the seminar will highlight the relevant topics in response to the issues stated in the rationale.

On this very special year, in commemoration of our 50th Anniversary, we cordially invite English language teachers, teacher trainers, faculty member of teacher training institutes, school principals, and other interested parties in ELT to participate in a one-day seminar on:

The notion that the ability to master English yields opportunities for better education, employment, and career enhancement, particularly in this era of globalization, has brought about changes in English language education. Education authorities from many countries all over the world are implementing the teaching of subject matters using English as the medium of instruction. In Indonesia, this has become a growing trend which has manifested itself in the establishment of National Plus schools, Internationally Accredited schools (Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional & Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional), for primary and secondary education as well as international classes in higher education.

Consequently, the integration of content and English language teaching has brought about challenges for both content and language teachers. While attention needs to be given to the content teachers in terms of developing their English competencies, similar considerations need to be addressed to the ELT teachers in developing their competencies in subject matters such as Math, Science, and Social studies.

This seminar aims to empower English language teachers in facing these challenges teaching students to use English to learn and at the same time facilitating students’ learning to use English. The presentation, workshop, and discussion sessions in the seminar will highlight the relevant topics in response to the issues above.

This workshop provides step by step procedures on how to implement the concepts in classroom teaching highlighting on techniques and materials adaptation

• Discussion

New roles of the ELT teachers

This discussion brings up the view that for the English teachers, remaining simply and solely a provider of English language teaching is not a viable option in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

We believe that participants taking part in this seminar will gain insights on how to enhance their expertise in meeting the growing demands of education authorities and the society. They will also get ideas on the kind of techniques they can develop to teach language as well as content when using materials/textbooks set by the their school’s curriculum.

RATIONALE

Sebagai lembaga bahasa Inggris terkemuka di Indonesia, LBPP LIA berkeyakinan bahwa kualitas pembelajaran bermuara dari kompetensi dan ketrampilan para tenaga pengajar. Berbagai kegiatan berupa pelatihan, lokakarya, seminar, konferensi tingkat nasional maupun internasional telah diselenggarakan guna meningkatkan dan mengembangkan kedua faktor tersebut.

Dalam rangka memperingati hari Ulang Tahun LIA ke 50, kami mengundang peran serta para guru mata pelajaran Matematika dan Sains, kepala sekolah, serta pemerhati pendidikan dalam seminar satu hari berjudul:

Latar Belakang

Maraknya pendirian dan pengembangan Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (RSBI) dan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (SBI) didasari oleh Undang-undang No. 20 Tahun 2003 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional. Dalam ketentuan ini, pemerintah didorong untuk mengembangkan satuan pendidikan yang bertaraf internasional. Standar internasional yang dituntut dalam SBI adalah Standar Kompetensi Lulusan, Kurikulum, Proses Belajar Mengajar, SDM, Fasilitas, Manajemen, Pembiayaan, dan Penilaian standar internasional. Dalam SBI, proses belajar mengajar disampaikan dalam dua bahasa yaitu bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia.

Maksud dan Tujuan Seminar

Seminar ini menekankan pada pengembangan kompetensi SDM, khususnya para tenaga pangajar mata pelajaran Matematika dan Sains, yang dituntut untuk menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar (English as the medium of instructions).

Berbekal pengalaman kami menyelenggarakan pelatihan English for Content Teachers* seminar ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan dan membekali guru-guru dengan:

• kemampuan dasar berbahasa Inggris yang diperlukan

– Bahasa instruksi pengajaran
- Target kosa kata

• teknik-teknik pengajaran yang menggabungkan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, Matematika dan Sains.

* English for Content Teachers (ECT) adalah program LBPP LIA yang bertujuan mempersiapkan guru-guru berbagai mata pelajaran menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai medium of instructions/ bahasa pengantar. Selama 4 tahun terakhir LBPP LIA telah melaksanakan program ECT di sekolah negeri maupun swasta tingkat sekolah dasar, sekolah menengah pertama dan sekolah menengah atas antara lain:
