Alastair Pennycook is Professor and Head of Language Studies at UTS. He has been involved in language education as a teacher of English and teacher educator for many years in Germany, Japan, China, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. His best known work is on the global spread of English (The cultural politics of English as an international language, Longman, 1994), colonialism and language policy (English and the discourses of colonialism, Routledge, 1998), and critical applied linguistics (Critical applied linguistics: A critical introduction, Lawrence Erlbaum, 2001).

His major recent research focus has been on popular culture (especially hip-hop), identity and language. He has recently completed work on two major projects looking at how language and hip-hop are spread and localized in different contexts around the world. Work from these projects can be found in his 2007 book Global Englishes and transcultural flows (Routledge), which won the British Association of Applied Linguistics book award in 2008, the edited book (with Samy Alim and Awad Ibrahim) Global Linguistic Flows: Hip Hop Cultures, Youth Identities, and the Politics of Language, (Routledge 2009), or the Local Noise website: http://localnoise.net.au/

Other recent work has focused on different ways of understanding language, as in the recent edited book (with Sinfree Makoni) Disinventing and reconstituting languages (Multilingual Matters, 2007), metrolingualism: language use in multilingual urban environments (with Emi Otsuji) , early literacy in disadvantaged communities, and understanding language in relation to place and action, which is the focus of a new book to be published in 2010, Language as a Local Practice (Routledge).

Current Position : Director of Academic Affairs, LBPP LIA

Hafilia Ismanto started her career in English Language Teaching in 1984 as a part time English teacher in LIA. She has held various positions since she became a full time teacher in 1998, namely, Head of Curriculum & Materials Development for ESP, Branch Manager of LBPP LIA Pengadegan and its extension—LBPP LIA Pasar Minggu, Teacher Training and Development Manager, and her present position as Director of Academic Affairs.

As Head of Curriculum & materials Development, she has designed course syllabus and written materials for LBPP LIA Conversation in English textbooks and various customized programs used for in-house training.

As Branch Manager of LBPP LIA Pengadegan and its extension—LBPP LIA Pasar Minggu, she played a key role in setting up LIA KID’s Center in LBPP LIA Pasar Minggu to meet the growing demand of parents who wish to provide English language education in elementary school level.

Her role as Teacher Training and Development Manager includes designing pre- and in-service training for LBPP LIA’s over 1000 teaching staff, academic operation officers (academic supervisors) and developing a competency-based recruitment & selection process for LIA’s candidate teachers. She developed the LIA FIESTA teacher profile which stands for Fun & Friendly, Interactive, Explorative, Systematic, Autonomous and conducted numerous training programs to nurture those characteristics needed to be a LIA teacher.

Her current position overlooks responsibilities such as setting up standards for the quality of learning & teaching process in the institution, updating and modifying LBPP LIA Core Curriculum to suit changing needs in the society, and developing LIA teachers competencies and LIA textbooks materials in line with the LIA’s pedagogical principles of language learning & teaching—Learning is fun, Learning more than just English, Learning how to learn, specifically within the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context.

Her special interests in the past years are promoting teacher development efforts, finding ways to fight teacher burnout syndrome, developing passion for teaching, and motivating the unmotivated teachers. This has led to the initiation of the LIA Conferences web site, liaconferences.com, which serves as a media dedicated to teacher development, which she believes is the heart and soul of the true professionals.
