LIA is celebrating its 50 years of teaching English amidst considerations that are being raised in the current context of English language teaching. LIA started out with Audio-Lingual teaching practices, which, at that time, seemed to be the most common approach. In the process, as new methods and practices came about, LIA has explored and adopted new teaching practices to optimize language learning.

Today, English has become the language for communication spoken by native and non-native speakers worldwide. The tremendous demands for the use of English in the 21st century have forced language teaching experts and professionals to look into other concerns besides language teaching and learning alone but language teaching and learning in different settings, cultures, and linguistic backgrounds. The profession of English language teaching today has to examine the pros and cons that deal with considerations of World English or World Englishes, English as an International Language, and acceptable standards that should be applied.

To keep abreast with what language teaching experts are concerned with, LIA International Conference 2010 hopes to provide a platform for language teaching experts and professionals to bring in and share new insights, current considerations and problems that impact on language teaching and learning in all of its aspects: linguistic, social, and cultural. LIA hopes that with this kind of dialog, the conference will bring about a better understanding and greater tolerance and acceptance of the differences in communication among world cultures.

By Satria Onny Firmanto

LBPP LIA as the biggest non formal language institute in Indonesia, commemorating its 50th anniversary, launches a series of workshops and seminars in 10 main cities in Indonesia including Jakarta, Bekasi, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Padang, Palembang, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, and Makassar. The topic for the programs is “Learing English and Content: Enhancing Students’ Ability in Using English to Learn and Learning to Use English” featuring Ms. Selestin Zainuddin, M. Hum and Mr. Ali Aljufri, SPd from Teacher Training and Development Sub-directorate as the key speakers.

LBPP LIA Surabaya hosted the seminar and workshop on December 10th 2009. Since the program was also used as a marketing move, that is to introduce its new building, the seminar and workshop were held in Jalan Ngagel Jaya number 8. Forty eight teachers from at least 15 schools in Surabaya participated in the program. Due to their various backgrounds, the participants were divided into 2 classes for English Language Teacher (ELT) and English Content Teacher (ECT). The program covered 3 sessions: A presentation on “An Introduction to Content and Language Integrated Learning”, a workshop on “The Implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Classroom and a question and answer session on “Challenges for English Teachers in Implementing Content and Language Integrated Learning”.

The participants gave positive feedbacks to the program. Ms. Alfiah, a science teacher, said that the program has given an insight on CLIL that she has never got before. Mr. Warsito, a Mathematics teacher, stated that the program was very beneficial mainly for the ECT teacher since it introduces a new teaching pedagogy. The speaker helped him to understand bilingual concept better through CLIL. He hoped that LBPP LIA could hold another event with different topics to enrich the knowledge of the teachers in Surabaya.(SOF)

Semoga. Amin.. (WS)

Thus, in commemoration of LBPP-LIA 50th Anniversary, on Saturday, July 18th 2009, LBPP-LIA Pontianak held a one day seminar on Learning English and Content with the subtopic “ Enhancing students’ ability in using English to learn and learning to use English, featuring Ms. Selestin Zainuddin, M Hum and Ali Aljufri Spd from Teacher Training and Development Sub-directorate as the key speakers.

The seminar, located at ASMI_ABA Campus on Jalan Imam Bonjol, attracted one hundred teachers consisting of 20 kindergarten teachers, 17 elementary school teachers, 7 junior high school teachers, 8 senior high school teachers, 16 vocational school teachers, 17 university students and 15 teachers from LBPP-LIA Pontianak itself. Because of their various backgrounds, the participants were divided into 2 classes, each of them with 50 participants. The workshop had 3 sessions: A presentation on “An Introduction to Content and Language Integrated Learning”, a workshop on “The Implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Classroom and a question and answer session on “Challenges for English Teachers in Implementing Content and Language Integrated Learning”.

The seminar was beneficial and got positive responses from the participants. For example, Mada, a junior high school teacher, mentioned that she had actually applied this CLIL but wasn’t aware of the term. Through this workshop she understood the theories better and she wanted to apply them in her classroom. Uray, a teacher from elementary school, expressed his difficulties in teaching English because of lack of facilities and no positive support from the school. He got lots of suggestions and solutions from the speaker as well as from other participants. Another teacher from SMP Koperasi, Asmin Adi Purna confessed that it was the best workshop on CLIL that he had ever attended. The speaker helped him to understand bilingual concept better through CLIL. He hoped that LBPP-LIA could hold another event with different topics to enrich the knowledge of the English practitioners in Pontianak.

The event was attended by 115 teachers from South Sulawesi province and the regions around, either from formal or non formal education, from kindergarten to higher education. Regarding the theme of Learning English and Content: Enhancing Students’ Ability in Using English to Learn and Learning to Use English, the Deputy of Educational Department, South Sulawesi Province, Bapak Saleh Gontang, said that this kind of workshop has enriched teachers, and it is in line with the Establishment of Internationally Accredited Schools (Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional /RSBI). He also suggested that the schools become Internationally Accredited schools in the future.

Ir. Hafilia R. Ismanto, MM, LBPP LIA Director of Academic Affairs, and Erna Fitrini, a teacher trainer, successfully got the participants actively involved in the activities given. According to Hafilia, the schools which are categorized Internationally Accredited Schools must be able to fulfil the International Standard, like the Competence of the Graduates, Curriculum, Learning Process, Human Resources, Facilities, Management, Financing and International Standard Evaluation. She said that the human resources of the schools have to be ready to fulfil the international standard. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach needed for language and Content teachers. CLIL emphasizes on dual-focus, the learning of English and the learning of other subjects. In line with the aims that the language teachers teach related to the subject and the content teachers teach related to the language.

The event has also attracted great interest to participants coming from regions outside Makassar (the capital city of South Sulawesi) such as Biak (Jayapura). On behalf of the committee, we would like to express our sympathy to one of the participants from Pare-Pare (155 km North of Makassar) who got traffic accident on the way to attend the workshop. Some participants have suggested carrying out other similar events twice a year because they think that the activities are applicable in their classroom. Finally, we would like to thank our sponsors. They are TelkomFlexi, Pearson Longman, Alfalink, Standard, Media Indonesia, Harian Fajar, Purwacaraka Music Studio, Fajar Pendidikan, Fajar FM and Makassar Terkini. They have given a great contribution in making this event successful.

On June 26th, 2009, LBPP-LIA conducted two one-day seminars for the Content teachers and the English teachers respectively in LBPP-LIA Yogyakarta with the theme ‘Learning English and Content’ and the title ‘ Enhancing Students’ Ability in Using English to Learn and Learning to Use English.’ The seminars were attended by 70 Content teachers and 27 English teachers, all of whom were assembled in the auditorium for the official opening by Drs. Alip Sudardjo Mpd, Kabid Dikmenti Dinas Propinsi DIY, who delivered his speech on the needs of Indonesian students to compete with the global world by ‘internationalizing’ Indonesian education system using Sekolah Berbasis International (International System-based Schooling) or CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). Afterwards, the Content teachers stayed in the auditorium for the seminar facilitated by Hafilia Ismanto and Ali aljufri, while the English teachers moved to room 318 to attend the session with Luz Ismail and Selestin Zainuddin.

The first two presenters in two different rooms – Ibu Hafilia and Ibu Luz – highlighted the widely conceived and perceived CLIL as a system in some established countries. In their elaboration, CLIL has been embraced in response to the increasing roles of political and economic aspects of the of the English speaking communities. The system requires not only English as the language of instructions, but also some feasibility and fitness in its curriculum, stakeholders and facilities. The speakers further asserted that the same trend may apply to Mandarin, as Chinese market power is starting the lead in the last decade. With CLIL, it is expected that teachers may not only teach language or the content, but they must teach both. Ibu Hafilia particularly asked whether the content teachers were ready and confident enough to implement the system in their schools.

Following the presentation session, Ibu Selestin led the English teachers to teach Geography, particularly about Australia and elicited from the participants what they had to pay attention to if they had to teach the lesson. Then she highlighted not only the vocabulary that the students could use in their Science subject , the functional expression that students needed for speaking skills, but also the basic grammar students needed to learn academic contents. While in the Content teachers session, then Ali Aljufri led an instructional workshop using a Math lesson. Using the prime and composite numbers, the teachers were challenged to make a number of classroom instructions in English. The participants enthusiastically simulated their teaching to the audience. The workshop, in fact, made the the content teachers realize that they need a lot of functional expressions to organize and conduct the classroom activities, especially in giving instructions to their students. At the end of the workshop, Ali Aljufri gave the participants some ready-to-use classroom instructions as feedback for their production.

In a heating atmosphere, the question raised by Ibu Hafil during the presentation session was eventually responded during the wrapping-up session where some teachers were totally up for the (CLIL) challenge, and some others were not. For example, Rini and Tusidi from SMP 5 said that there has been already collaboration between the Content teachers and the English teachers to implement CLIL, but in other schools, no collaboration exists. The reluctance of some content stems from the high challenge that teachers face – restarting learning. To encourage the Content teachers to use English in their classroom, Hafilia said that it was already good if the content teachers could open and close their sessions in English, then if they have already learned English, they could start using English in giving 25 percent of classroom instructions before they were confident using English for the whole session. However, Ibu Hafilia agreed that it is all up to both language and content teachers to respond to the challenge professionally.

From April 20 to 22, 2009, the writer participated as one of the speakers in the 44th RELC International Seminar which was conducted by Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in cooperation with Regional Language Center (RELC). The aims of the seminar were to identify the changes that have taken place over the past twenty years in the use of technology in language teaching, to discuss the effects of these new developments on the latest approaches to the teaching of languages, and to explore the future effects of technological developments on language learning process.

A big display screen showing how students of Jurong Primary School apply technology in their learning started the opening ceremony. Then, a group of students performed a jazz chant about how technology has changed the way they learn English.

The seminar was officially opened by H E Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, the Minister of Education of Thailand and the SEAMEO Council President. In his inauguration speech, he highlighted the facts how pen and paper lessons, chalk and talk methods are becoming archaic and teachers need to find ways to reach out to students who are fast becoming digital natives. A presentation from Philip Hubbard entitled Listening to Learn: New Opportunities in an Online World completed the opening ceremony.

During the parallel sessions, the writer attended several interesting sessions. On the first day, the writer attended the presentation about how to teach English with iPods for motivating learners conducted by Japanese lecturer Yasumi Murata. The second presentation of the parallel session was about the use of asynchronous computer-mediated communication in an academic writing course by Neni Isharyanti from Satya Wacana Salatiga. In the workshop session, the writer attended a workshop about how to make online activities and courses in an easy way which was presented by Eric Baber, a representative from Cambridge University Press. The participants learned how to use website like www.english360.com and www.quia.com to design, upload, and publish exercises. In the second day parallel session, the writer attended a presentation about how to mix teachers with technology by Lance Knowles, how to teach listening and speaking skills to young digital natives by Pamela Thuraisingam and Nisha Omar Khan, and how computer games teach teachers about today’s learners by Gavin D Dudeney. On this day, the writer gave a presentation about how to use Microsoft Learning Essentials for teaching English. A workshop session about integrating Podcasting into foreign language classes by Lara Ducate ended the second day. Her presentation showed how an iPod can be a powerful tool for improving students’ creativity and confidence in learning English. On the last day, the writer attended a presentation about using technology in lesson study to design a comprehensive instructional framework by Cherlyn Raeburn and about synchronizing language pedagogy and language software by Deborah Healey. A panel discussion ended the last day seminar.

The seminar was successful in emphasizing its messages. It really rings the bell which wakes us up to realize that we are now living in a high technology environment, that the technology should make learning easier and more interesting yet meaningful and purposeful, and that our students may be already one step ahead from us in dealing with the tech. Are we, teachers, ready to catch up with the rise of the machine in our classes?

Kontributor: Natalia Erlina Agustin, Ketua Panitia One-day Seminar/ Workshop Learning English and Content

Ternyata semangat belajar para guru Yogyakarta sangat tinggi.
