by: Idwar Ruslan

Tuesday, November 9, 2010, I got an e-mail invitation to participate in a roundtable chatting with the theme “Situational Awareness (SA)”. The sender elaborated a little bit about the theme with a short abstract.

I was really curious what the chatting would be like; how it was operated and conducted, whether it worked out well or not. My curiosity on all this mechanism was much higher than on the theme of the web chat itself. Before participating, I just tried to figure out the setting and layout of the monitor screen in front of me; was it going to be very complicated? How will the moderator lead the chat and discussion with participants from different parts of the world?

Five minutes before it started, I opened the respective website, filled out two boxes and entered as a guest. I was suggested to open another website because the operation was moved to Hong Kong. After I opened the new website, I saw the statements: “the connection in Hong Kong is good, it is good in Bangkok?” I typed something “Is it better in Jakarta now?” Woow, Damon Anderson (the host), which I didn’t expect, welcomed me and played around a little bit by calling me “id war rusian?”

03:00 PM, the discussion started. Damon changed the layout of the screen. Now, he put the abstract on the left and participants’ ideas on the bottom right of the screen and other participants can write questions or comments.

It was a free discussion. Participants could write questions, comments, argumentations, elaborations, responses, etc. and had to scroll up when there are no more space to write. I just gave a short comment based on my experience teaching students. The students didn’t feel that they learned something if the teacher didn’t point out clearly the “plus one” (language points which were being taught, which they have not acquired according to Krashen’s language acquisition theory). I said, it could be something related to culture. A participant from China absolutely agreed to that statement.

At the end, I had one thing in mind: “What a small world!”

The 46th RELC International Seminar will explore approaches, issues, and questions related to teaching language learners across different age groups. From this discussion, the Seminar hopes to draw out implications for language teaching, learning, testing, and the training of teachers.

Introduction

There is a growing interest in teaching second or even foreign languages to younger children. At the same time, working adults are increasingly required to use a second or foreign language at work or to spend time overseas. Although there are some common factors in the language learning process for each group, there are also differences. Both need to learn to use the vocabulary and grammatical features of the new language, but the motivation for adults is more likely to be instrumental, while that for young learners is more likely to involve affective factors. Such similarities and differences can influence the approach to learning and teaching for each group, and this raises the question as to whether the strategies, approaches, and materials used by one group can also be successfully used by the other.

The 46th RELC International Seminar will explore approaches, issues, and questions related to teaching language learners across different age groups. From this discussion, the Seminar hopes to draw out implications for language teaching, learning, testing, and the training of teachers.

Topic

Teaching Language to Learners of Different Age Groups.

Date and Venue

18 – 20 April 2011

SEAMEO Regional Language Centre

30 Orange Grove Road

Singapore 258352

Aims

The 46th RELC Seminar has the following aims:

To look into the commonalities of teaching and learning a language whatever the age group

To examine the differences between teaching and learning languages for different age groups

To establish the consequences of the similarities and differences in terms of method, materials, testing, and teacher training

Topic Areas

The Seminar will explore issues related to language learners of different age groups. Topic areas could include:

-The Age Factor

-Motivation and its role in language learning

-The learning needs of language learners

-Methods and materials

-Pronunciation

-Language knowledge

-Culture and language teaching

-Technology

-Assessment

-Teacher training and development

Presentations

1. Invited Speaker Papers

These are formal lecture presentations by distinguished scholars in the field lasting forty-five minutes plus fifteen minutes question time.

2. Parallel Papers

These are formal lecture presentations lasting thirty minutes plus ten minutes question time. The Seminar Planning Committee reserves the right to assign papers to either the Invited Speaker or the Parallel Sessions.

3. Workshops

In these ninety-minute sessions, there is little lecturing by the leaders. Instead, the participants are engaged in activities that have been carefully structured by the leaders.

4. Procedure for Submission of Paper/Workshop Proposals

A 150-250 word abstract with a title not exceeding twelve words and a 50 word biodata should be sent to the Seminar Secretariat no later than 26 November 2010. Abstracts outside the word limit will not be accepted.

The Seminar Planning Committee will inform proposers by 28 January 2011 whether their proposals have been accepted. Presenters are required to confirm participation with payment of registration fees by 18 February 2011 and to register for the full seminar i.e. 2½ days.

A soft copy of the completed text of the paper selected for the Seminar must be sent to the Seminar Secretariat no later than 18 March 2011. If these are not received by this date, the Committee reserves the right to withdraw the paper from presentation.

5. Criteria for Acceptance

All abstracts will be evaluated by the Seminar Planning Committee. Relevance to the theme of the Seminar and freshness and originality of approach are among the major considerations in the acceptance of papers. The Committee reserves the right to decline paper/workshop proposals without assigning reasons.

6. Copyright/Publication

RELC reserves the copyright over all papers presented at the Seminar. Selected papers will be published. The copyright of papers not published by RELC will be reassigned to the authors.

7. Funding

As a professional non-profit organization, RELC does not generally provide financial assistance to paper/workshop presenters. Thus the registration fee is payable by all participants and parallel paper and workshop presenters.
